MarchLife_0159-adjustedBLOOMFIELD – There are still opportunities for people throughout the Archdiocese of Hartford to attend the 39th annual March for Life.

Archdiocesan organizers and others have told The Catholic Transcript that openings exist on buses traveling to the march. The march is scheduled to take place on Jan. 23 in Washington, D.C.

The March for Life annually attracts more than 100,000 Catholics and other advocates for life who seek reversal of the Jan. 22, 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States. The March for Life started the next year and takes place annually on or near Jan. 22.

A rally is held before the march at 1:30 p.m. on the National Mall. The march then begins from that location and goes up Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court.

Other activities, such as Masses and visits to lawmakers’ offices, also are planned.

Mary Lou Peters, assistant coordinator of the Archdiocese of Hartford’s Pro-Life Ministry, said that the following people are serving as contacts for those who want seats on a bus:

Jim, in Windsor Locks, at (860) 623-0243; Jean, in West Hartford, at (860) 379-1542; Bob, in Waterbury, at (203) 757-5213; Janet, in New Haven, at (203) 878-4097; and Margaret, in Norwich, at (860) 822-1362.

Participants in the annual archdiocesan Pilgrimage for Life will leave from the Franciscan Life Center at 271 Finch Ave. at 6:30 a.m. Jan. 22.

The trip to the March for Life will include a vigil Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Henry J. Mansell at the Washing-ton Plaza Hotel and breakfast at the hotel.

The cost for the bus and breakfast is $100. The hotel fee is separate. Information is available at (203) 639-0833, (203) 745-7300 or (203) 239-1441.

Also, for the 34th consecutive year, the pro-life committee of St. Mary Parish in Windsor Locks is sponsoring a bus.

The bus will depart on Jan. 22 from All Saints Parish in Somersville at 10:30 p.m. and from St. Mary at 11.

Those on the bus will attend Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and then have breakfast. The bus will take them downtown to meet with lawmakers, pray outside the offices of an abortion provider, rally at the National Mall and participate in the March for Life.

The bus will return the same night. The fee is $45, but $30 for teens.

Organizers are seeking sponsors and donations.

Information is available from Hal Larson at (860) 292-1914, Lynda Bailey at (860) 763-0509 and Francie Clark at (860) 749-4841.
