Another giant in the field of clean energy, with an investment of R$2.3 billion, started operating in Rio Grande Norte this year. The Santo Agostinho wind farm is being assembled in the municipalities of Lajes and Pedro Avellino with a capacity of 434 MW. The project schedule and investment plans for the company – Engie Brasil Energia – were presented on Wednesday (16) to Governor Fatma Bezira.

In Santo Agostinho there will be 70 wind turbines with a height of 170 meters and a production capacity of 6.2 megawatt-hours per unit, three times the equipment currently in use. The company’s planned future investments over the next five years in the total RN 6.5 billion Rls.
Engi installed itself at RN in 2017. It has two PV projects in operation, Assu V, which produces 30 MW, and Floresta, in Areia Branca, with a capacity of 101 MW. The future projects are the solar parks in Aso Seoul. Assu I, II, III, IV and Santo Agostinho Solar, according to Marcio Neves, COO; and Giuliano Pasquale, the company’s project manager. According to the schedule presented to the governor, the first wind turbine will start operating in September this year, reaching 14 by the end of the year.
“Our company is characterized by long-term investments, social responsibility, and partnerships with states and municipalities,” said Eduardo Satamine, President of Engi Brasil, who accompanied the meeting in a virtual way.
ENGIE is the largest private energy company in Brazil, engaged in the generation, marketing and transmission of electric power, gas transmission and energy solutions. It has the largest natural gas transmission network in the country, with a distance of 4,500 km, traversing 10 states and 191 municipalities, thanks to the acquisition of TAG, which was completed in 2020.
RN’s electrical matrix is made up of 87% clean and renewable sources. Of the seven sources of power generation marketed in Brazil, Rio Grande do Norte has five. There are 443 power generation projects that are powered by wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and natural gas.
In the wind sector, the country is the leading nation nationwide with 213 plants in operation, with a total of 6.5 GW of installed capacity and more than 2,400 turbines in operation. In addition, 44 new parks with a total capacity of 1.4 GW are under construction.
The municipality of Serra do Mel has 17% of installed capacity, and is the largest generation center in Rio Grande do Norte. Second in the ranking is João Câmara with 13% and in third place Parazinho with 11%. RN has seven offshore (offshore) wind farm projects in the licensing process with Ibama.
