A British judge on Wednesday ordered the deportation of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States. Assange has been in prison in London since April 2019. He is accused of violating US spy law.
One month ago, the UK Supreme Court rejected the journalist’s appeal to prevent him from being deported. An order will still be sent to British Home Secretary Priti Patel to verify the deportation. Assange’s defense can appeal until May 18.
U.S. officials have accused Chelsea Manning, an intelligence officer in the U.S. Armed Forces, of aiding and abetting the release of hundreds of classified Foreign Office documents. He faces up to 175 years in prison.
In 2010, the website WikiLeaks Manning leaked a series of leaked US government documents. Contains data on Baghdad and airstrikes in July 2007 Afghan wars And Iraq.
The defense alleges that Assange’s practices are protected by the journalism and public interest of his work. They say he was subjected to political persecution.
The journalist was arrested in 2019 at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. He took refuge in the embassy, but President Lenin Moreno accused him of violating asylum rules, for which he was expelled. Assange is currently in the highest security prison in the UK.
