Foz do Iguaçu is close to a dengue epidemic

In recent weeks, the number of cases has risen dramatically. The city has already accounted for 5,101 notifications.

Foz do Iguaçu on alert as dengue fever progresses. With 5,101 notifications and 318 confirmed cases since August 2021, the beginning of the epidemic year, the disease is worrying due to the increase in records in recent weeks, which could lead to an epidemic in the city. Across Paraná, there are already 90,344 reported cases and 30,010 confirmed cases. Five people have died from the disease, two in the Western Region, in Medianera and Matilandia.

In Foz do Iguaçu, the most important region is the Eastern Health District, which includes the Morumbi region, with 31% of all registered cases., followed by the northern region, the old villages area of Itaipu, with 25% of the assertions (see table below). The age group with the highest number of cases is 15-29, with 38% of records.

Jane Rios, the vector program coordinator at the Centers for Zoonoses Disease Control (CCZ), considers the situation worrying because, in the past three weeks, the number of cases has increased. “The past three years have been epidemic, with cases above the historical average. Now it’s back to the extent expected, but if it continues to increase, we can go into an epidemic,” Gann explains. He stresses that the months of April and May are usually worrying because of the weather, with rain and heat.

To combat dengue, field-endemic agents are conducting active research, in order to identify infected persons, based on case records made in basic health units (UBSs). Inspection of vacant spaces and visits to residents’ homes are also carried out. The smoke, which had been used regularly in previous years, is no longer in use because the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the disease, has become resistant to the poison. “What solves it is cleaning back yards,” Jean confirms.

A novelty in disease control is the establishment of larvicide dissemination stations, a project by Fucruz Amazonia in partnership with the Ministry of Health. Stations are a type of trap that consists of a plastic container covered with a black cloth with larvicide powder. Upon contact with the substance, the female mosquito becomes contaminated with the larvicide and spreads the product to other breeding sites where she distributes her eggs.

The city council’s goal is to install at least 1,200 traps in the municipality in a first stage. It already operates more than 350 in Vila C, Portal da Foz, Jardim América, Porto Belo, Lagoa Dourada and Campos do Iguaçu.

Presence – Anyone with dengue symptoms should look for a UBS. There, an evaluation is done, and the person receives a dengue card to monitor for symptoms. If the condition develops, it is necessary to look for a UPA.

The main symptoms of dengue fever are high temperature, headache, malaise and nausea. The incubation period for the disease ranges from three to five days, and some people may not have symptoms. Dengue fever can develop into the most serious form, especially when infected more than once.
