The origin of electric cars sold in Europe from 2019 to 2022 (InsideEVs / Reproduction)

Currently, about 1.2 million electric passenger cars cross Europe – and of this total, more than 175,000 are manufactured in China. However, not everything is sold under a Chinese brand, as a good part of Western automakers, such as BMW and Tesla, to sell domestically produced cars.

In 2019, only British MG, owned by the Chinese group Saic, sold 1,738 electric cars manufactured in the largest country in Asia. The following year, even in the worst phases of the Covid-19 pandemic in Europe, MG’s volume rose to 13,000 – an increase of more than 600%. It also coincided with the emergence of Polestar (owned by the Chinese company Geely, which now also owns Volvo) on the continent, increasing the number of models sold to 25507 in 2020.

The quality gap for Japan/Korea and the West is almost non-existent

The rapid growth of industrialization in China is due to the country’s ability to bridge the quality gap with Western countries and neighboring countries of Japan and South Korea. Today, the world’s leading automakers, such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and TeslaWe have factories in the country. Globalization has also made the manufacturing process standardized all over the world – the Polestar 2 produced in Zhejiang is no different from that produced in Stockholm.

The “made in China” bias has receded, with the passing of 2010 and the acquisition of Chinese cars, to the point that it’s almost a mirror of another era.

This should be just the beginning. Unlike the combustion car market, where the West still has an advantage, China is in a better position to take over the electricity sector, to the point that the Ministry of Industry and Technology itself is concerned about The level of market competition in the country. Soon, brands like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and Honda should start selling their electric cars made in China, and the number of domestic models circulating not only in Europe but in the world should increase more.
