Scotland reacts to the campaign for independence from the UK

Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced on Tuesday that he plans to hold a second referendum on the country’s independence in October next year. He vowed to take legal action if the British government tried to block the plan.

According to Sturgeon, the Scottish government, led by the pro-independence Scottish National Party, will release the draft referendum on October 19, 2023, the recommended date for the referendum.

He also said he would write to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson seeking permission to hold a public consultation, but said he had already begun plans to gain legal authority if he blocked the plans.

I am not prepared to allow Scottish democracy to allow Boris Johnson or the Prime Minister to be imprisoned by the Scottish people in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday.

Voters in Scotland, with a population of about 5.5 million, rejected independence in 2014. But the country’s semi-autonomous government says the question should be left to a second referendum on Britain’s exit from the European Union, where most of Scotland are competing.

Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party strongly opposes a referendum – the issue was resolved when the party voted 55 to 45% against Scots independence in 2014.

Earlier, Boris had refused to issue an order authorizing the Scottish Parliament to hold a public consultation. (Folhapress)
