Sterling banknotes bearing the image of King Charles III went into circulation in the United Kingdom this Wednesday (5), to gradually replace banknotes bearing the image of his mother Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022.

The portrait of King Charles III will appear on the new £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes, similar to the current notes, the Bank of England said in a statement.

From 2016, new polymer notes will replace paper money in the United Kingdom, alongside notes featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

The report explains that the banknotes will be printed gradually to “replace worn ones” to “minimize the environmental and financial impact” of the change of monarch.

The new banknotes will become as much a part of everyday British life as the coins bearing Charles III’s image, which will go into circulation in December 2022, months after his mother’s death.
