Fibromyalgia, according to the SBR (Brazilian Society of Rheumatology) is a clinical syndrome that affects the entire body, especially in muscle areas. Studies show that the disease affects approximately 4% of the entire world’s population, with a prevalence among women aged 35-44 years. Among Brazilians, about 4.8 million people have the disease, but only 2.5% of this population receive appropriate treatment.

Alarming numbers, because fibromyalgia, despite being a chronic disease, has an effective treatment, which reduces the effects of the syndrome and improves the quality of life of patients. In this way, awareness becomes an essential issue in combating the problem. After all, people often do not know about the existence of this disease, which, in theory, is common and can infect anyone.

However, the causes of fibromyalgia still put some question marks in the minds of scientists. But it is already known, for example, that the syndrome can appear in people’s lives after some traumatic physical or psychological event or even a serious injury. According to the SBR, these events can “liberate” the brain, which begins sending out intense pain stimuli without any apparent need.

Usually the first sign is localized pain that spreads over time to the rest of the body. Neurosurgeon Dr. Marcelo Valadares explains: “The symptoms are similar to those of other diseases, such as tendinitis, or insufficient and intense exercise. Fibromyalgia is not always diagnosed and treated as expected, as it is also considered an emotional disease.”

According to the specialist, the syndrome also changes the state of the brain in patients and increases the sensation of pain. Thus, even if it is properly treated with a rheumatologist, it is also important to consult a neurologist.

Effective measures to relieve pain caused by fibromyalgia include simple activities such as stretching, low-intensity physical exercise, yoga, and acupuncture. But beware, before testing any of these options, it is necessary to seek help from a specialist, so that he can evaluate you and choose the most effective treatment. Strenuous physical activity, for example, can make the problem worse.

Also, a method that might work for one person won’t necessarily work for another. In this case, only an experienced specialist will know the best way to cope and solve the problem.
