China Telecom license revoked by US regulatory authority – 10/27/2021

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27, 2021 (AFP) – The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Tuesday suspended accreditation of a local subsidiary of China Telecom to operate in the United States, citing “significant risks” to national security.

China Telecom Americas, which is controlled by Beijing, has been ordered by the FCC to suspend its service within 60 days, ending nearly 20 years of activity in the United States, raising tensions between the two economic powers.

The ownership and control of the Chinese government poses significant risks to national security and law enforcement, “the FCC explained.

China Telecom has been in turmoil in the United States for years. When Donald Trump was president, the company was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange, along with state-owned telecom companies China Mobile and China Unicom, following a Republican executive order.

U.S. regulators have also taken action against other Chinese telecom companies. The Trump administration launched an intense campaign in 2018 to thwart Huawei’s global ambitions, preventing the technology company from accessing key components and banning the use of Android system services.
