The nearly two-meter-tall ‘penis plant’ has bloomed for the first time in 25 years

The ‘penis plant’ has blossomed in a botanical garden in the Netherlands this month. According to a Leiden University botanist, this is the third time this species has flowered in Europe since 1997. The plant’s scientific name is Amorphophallus decoration forest.

The stem is 1.98 m long and 48.7 cm in diameter. The plant is six years old and was planted by volunteer Rodmer Postma. The team first noticed the flower bud in mid-September.

“A few botanical gardens have Amorphophallus decus-silvae in their collection, which makes flowering of the plant particularly rare,” the university said in a statement. Native to Indonesia, the species requires a very hot and humid environment to grow.

When blooming, the plant emits an odor resembling the smell of rotting flesh to attract insects. Since there was no other plant of this type in the garden, the staff collected pollen for later use or sent to other plant spaces.

About a week after flowering, the Botanical Garden shared a new photo of the “penis plant” after the flowering stage. According to the foundation, the factory “will collapse soon.”
