After horrific images of Afghans chasing planes on the tarmac in Kabul, another brutal story: remains have been found in the plane’s landing cabin, according to the US Air Force.
The Air Force said in a press release that its investigative division is investigating “civilian casualties” that occurred when a crowd ran after a plane on Monday (16/8).
Afghans were desperate to leave the country after the Taliban seized control of the runway at Kabul International Airport and attempted to board planes.
“In addition to videos and press reports of people falling from the plane during takeoff, human remains have been discovered in the landing gear compartment of the C-17. [o avião] “After landing at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar,” the US Air Force Press Administration said in a statement.
The investigation “will be thorough to make sure we get the facts related to this tragic incident.” Our hearts are with the families of the dead.
On Monday, the plane landed at Hamid Karzai International Airport, carrying equipment and supplies to support the evacuation of Afghan and American civilians from Afghanistan.
Before it could unload the supplies, the plane was surrounded by hundreds of Afghans. According to the US Air Force, “In the face of the rapidly deteriorating security situation, the C-17 crew decided to leave the runway as quickly as possible.”
By this time, crowds of Afghans had climbed onto the wings of the plane and into the cabin where the landing gear would fold after takeoff.
According to the US Air Force, the remains were discovered when the plane landed in Qatar. The plane is booked “to allow time for the collection of remains and an inspection of the aircraft” before it can return to the flight.
“The US Air Force remains focused on maintaining security at Kabul International Airport to prevent a situation like this from happening again as we are safely prosecuting Afghan civilians seeking to leave the country,” the official statement said.
It is not known if this plane is the same as the one in the video that appears to show two people falling from a plane that has just taken off. Other videos show how desperate Afghans climbed onto the wings of a plane, holding them before takeoff.
The day before, another C-17 was packed with about 640 people on board, after hundreds of people climbed onto the loading ramps—and a picture of that moment went viral.
