He said he died of complications from a heart attack.
“Interview with a Vampire” was released in 1976 and was a remake of the Vampire fiction genre, adapted in 1994 for the film by Neil Jordan with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as protagonists.
Rice has authored dozens of books, some with erotic and others with a religious overtones, and has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide in several “Vampire” series.
Another of his works, the 1988 “Queen of the Damned” was adapted into a 2002 film by Michael Rymer.
“The amount of pain in our family cannot be overstated. As a mother, the support she gave me was unconditional: it taught me to embrace my dreams, to reject compromise, and to challenge the dark voices of fear and doubt, ”his son wrote.
“As a writer, he taught me to challenge gender boundaries and surrender to my hysterical feelings,” she added.
The rice will be buried at a private ceremony in New Orleans.
Next year there will be a public celebration in the city, according to his son, who will be invited to gather again “friends, readers and fans”.
