Between 1996 and 2020, in the matches of the extinct Copa Conmebol or Libertadores, seven Brazilian teams faced the complex journey to Ibagui, a flight and bus journey that took no less than 10 hours in total.
Vasco, Rio Branco, Gremio, Corinthians and Atlético-PR were defeated, only Cruzeiro and Internacional were able to equalise. Of all the contenders, only Acre managed to sway Tolima’s nets on Colombian soil (they lost 2-1 in 1997).

Tolima’s most famous victory over the Brazilian was in 2011, when the team beat Corinthians de Tite, Ronaldo and the company 2-0, and issued a decision to eliminate Paulista that year before the Libertadores. It was the first time a team from the country had fallen so early in the continental competition.
Last year, Bragantino managed to beat Tolima away, in the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana, but the match ended up in Venezuela, due to restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

With goals from Nacho and Chi Chi, Gallo broke their opponent’s record unbeaten on Colombian soil, and also became the first team to defeat Tolima in their Libertadores debut – so far, there have been five wins and three draws in eight appearances.
With the win, Atletico start ahead of Group D. The team shares the leadership of the group with Independiente del Valle-Eco, who beat America in Independence by the same score: 2-0.
