Car crashes, kills more than 50 migrants in Mexico

At least 53 people were killed Thursday (9) in an accident in which a vehicle carrying migrants clandestinely overturned on a road in Chiapas, Mexico, according to sources from the state attorney general’s office.

According to a report by the Chiapas deputy, 54 more people were injured. The state borders Guatemala and is the main arrival point for undocumented immigrants in southern Mexico.

The President of Mexico, Andres Lopez Obrador, expressed his regret for the tragedy in a post on his personal Twitter page. “I deeply regret the tragedy caused by the overturning of a trailer in Chiapas carrying Central American migrants. It is very painful. I embrace the families of the victims,” ​​said Lopez Obrador.

Alejandro Giamatti, President of Guatemala, also spoke about the incident. “I deeply regret the tragedy in Chiapas and sympathize with the families of the victims, to whom we provide all necessary consular assistance, including repatriations,” Giamatti said.
