China counts half a million for every COVID-19 outbreak

The exporting province of Zhejiang recorded more than 200 infections in one week, and the authorities closed factories and detained 540 thousand people. At the same time, the country records its first case of Omicron. And Zhejiang Province, an important economic center in China, recorded in recent days an outbreak of the Covid-19 virus, which prompted the authorities, on Tuesday (14/12), to restrict half a million people and close factories in several industrial areas.

Zhejiang, an industrial and export hub in eastern China, reported 44 of the 51 direct infection cases detected in the country on Tuesday, bringing the number of infections in the province to 217 since last week.

Although the number is small compared to other densely populated countries, Zhejiang authorities have conducted widespread testing and ordered lockdowns to deal with the outbreak as Beijing prepares to host the Winter Olympics in February.

Local authorities reported that more than 540,000 people were detained.

In parallel, the Chinese press reported, on Monday, that China had discovered the first omicron case of the new Corona virus in the northern city of Tianjin.

The rapid development of the outbreak

Health officials said the outbreak in Zhejiang Province was advancing very quickly in three cities: Ningbo, Shaoxing and Hangzhou.

In recent days, some areas in Ningbo, the main port of Zhejiang, and the neighboring city of Shaoxing have already reported that they will suspend some business operations.

In Zhenhai, one of the provinces of Ningbo with a large petrochemical base, all non-core enterprises have been forced to close, and petrochemical producers will have to reduce production.

Several companies in the provincial capital, Hangzhou, also announced the suspension of production. Hundreds of flights were canceled from Hangzhou on Tuesday.

Zhejiang is one of the highest GDP provinces in China and a major exporter. Ningbo, Shaoxing, and Hangzhou account for about half of the trillion-dollar annual GDP. Specialists said that the closure of factories will have an impact on the production chain in various sectors such as textiles.
