China promises strong response if Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan

a Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian warned that Pelosi’s possible visit would “damage the foundations of Sino-US relations” and “send false signals to the separatists” in Taiwan.

Zhao said the US House of Representatives is “part of the US government” and therefore “should firmly adhere to the ‘One China’ principle advocated by the United States.”

Today, Fuji News Network and several Taiwanese outlets have offered the possibility of Pelosi visiting Taiwan.

Zhao Lijian reiterated that China “opposes any kind of official contact between the United States and the island of Taiwan” and warned that Washington would “be responsible for the consequences” and “retaliatory measures” by Beijing.

If the trip takes place, it will be the first visit by the speaker of the US House of Representatives to Taiwan since 1997, when Republican Newt Gingrich visited the island.

Nancy Pelosi and her team neither confirmed nor denied the visit.

China’s Defense Ministry announced today its opposition to the United States’ sale of military equipment worth 95 million US dollars (87 million euros) to Taiwan, which includes material and technical assistance for the Patriot missile defense system.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said it was pleased with the agreement, which “will help the island protect itself from the military expansion and continued provocation of Beijing.”

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman today accused the island’s authorities of “depending on the United States in pursuit of independence” and accused the US government of “using the island to contain China.”

Taiwan is one of the most important sources of tension between China and the United States, especially since Washington is the main supplier of arms to Taiwan and will be its largest military ally in the event of a war with China.

China and Taiwan have been living as two autonomous regions since 1949, when the former Chinese nationalist government took refuge on the island after defeat in the civil war against the communists.

China, which considers the island part of the country, threatens to reunite by force if necessary.
