A Sao Paulo court has ordered Rede Globo to pay compensation of R$150,000 to a fan football whose photo was unfairly disclosed in a report as being responsible for a crime.
On February 12, police detained R. M. After an argument around Allianz Park, in Barra Fonda, São Paulo. Palmerins, he went to the place to follow on television, with other fans, the final of the Club World Championship for his team against Chelsea, which was being held in Abu Dhabi. Because of the controversy, he ended up staying from five in the evening until eight in the evening at the police station, when he was released.
But on February 16, his photo was published in a report presented by the program “Bom dia São Paulo” as being responsible for a robbery that took place the day before at Congonhas airport. But the information was wrong. RM did not participate in the episode.
A photo of the moment he was arrested on match day was mistakenly used to illustrate the theft report, which described the fan as a “criminal”.
“There is no doubt that the author [do processo] He was not an agent of the robbery at Congonhas airport, although due to an unjustified mistake his photo was transmitted as such,” said Judge Tania Cardan.
The fan wanted to arbitrate compensation in the amount of one million Brazilian riyals, but the judge considered the amount excessive. In addition to the R$150,000, the judge decided that Globo should permanently exclude Palmeirense’s image from its digital platforms.
The broadcaster, which can still appeal the ruling, said in the lawsuit that it was not responsible for the error, as it only broadcasts official information provided by police sources.
He also said that after he became aware of the operation, he deleted the relevant report from his digital platforms.
