King Charles III spoke at the official opening of the new House of Commons at the British Parliament in London today (17).
Charles’s speech focused on the new centre-left government’s plan to curb the rise in the cost of living in the UK and the housebuilding programme.
Although traditionally read by the monarch, the text of the speech is always written by the government – in this Wednesday’s case, by the Labor Party that won the July 4 general election.
Keir Starmer is the first Labor member to become Prime Minister in the United Kingdom after 14 years of right-wing Conservative government.
This speech attempted to set a new tone for British politics. Encouraging public service as opposed to individual initiative.
The package of more than 35 bills announced focuses on restarting economic growth, reforming urban planning laws to facilitate housing and speeding up the delivery of major infrastructure projects, improving transportation and creating jobs.
“My government’s legislative program will be work-oriented and based on the principles of security, justice and opportunity for all,” the King’s speech read.
