Ambassador Celso Amorim, Special Adviser to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) on International Affairs, this weekend’s attack on former US President Donald Trump does not mean that he is guaranteed victory in this year’s elections.

Amorim will travel to the US this week to participate in educational events and meet with White House National Security Adviser Jack Sullivan. The trip comes days after Trump was wounded in a shooting during a rally in Pennsylvania.

The attack’s impact on the US election, where incumbent President Joe Biden has been pressured to withdraw from the candidacy due to his health, is still being studied, but Trump supporters believe it will provide a strong boost to the Republican campaign.

“It is difficult to assess the impact of this attack at this time. We do not know all the circumstances. We don’t even know who the Democratic nominee is. […] Obviously, Trump’s supporters will try to capitalize on his bloody photo, that’s for sure,” Amorim said in an interview. Newspaper Released this Sunday (14).

For Celso Amorim, it will be necessary to wait for the next voter intention polls to find out how both voters and Electoral College representatives will react. In fact, this is a complicating factor from the ambassador’s point of view.

“No poll guarantees any election, but in the US it’s even harder because more votes don’t guarantee victory”, he pointed out.

However, the ambassador confirmed President Lula’s stance of supporting Joe Biden’s victory despite his fragile health. He sees a vision “more similar” to the Brazilian government in the Democratic Party.

“Of course, we have a lot of identification with Biden, who even defended democracy in Brazil, and we like the economic and social policy. We also have some differences on foreign policy, which is natural,” he added.

Lula has often defended Biden’s continuity, but says it is up to him to decide whether or not he can continue to run for office. The US president is under pressure to drop out of the presidential race, especially after the debate with Trump, who reacted slowly.

“I personally like Biden, I’ve met him many times. I think he has a problem, he walks slowly, takes too long to respond to things. But Biden is the one who knows about Biden’s conditions,” Lula said in a recent interview.

Brazil’s president, a staunch critic of the Republican Party, rejected the attack on Trump this weekend. He even called him a “false citizen” and said that elections in the United States “could make the world better or worse, depending on who wins.”

“The world must become humane, supportive, brotherly and humane. “People are very angry and very irritated,” he pointed out.
