The largest healthcare plan operator in New York State, USA Northwell Health laid off 1,400 employees who refused to take the Covid-19 vaccineCompany spokesperson, Joe Kemp, revealed Monday (4).
Like other operators who have also laid off workers who did not comply with vaccination requirements, laid-off employees represent a small percentage of Northwell’s workforce, which includes more than 76,000 employees, all of whom are now vaccinated.
a Mandatory vaccination of health workers went into effect last week in New York. Several other states, including California, have imposed similar measures.
Officials attributed the high number of vaccinators to the requirements, although a few officials decided they would rather lose their jobs than vaccinate.
Northwell announced mandatory vaccinations in August, weeks before the state ordinance. The company’s requirements extend to both clinical and non-medical personnel.
“Our goal was not to fire the employees,” Kemp said. “Our goal was to vaccinate people“.
Kemp said the layoffs would have no impact on patient care across the 23 hospitals and other facilities in Northwell.
“Northwell regrets the loss of any employee under these circumstances,” the company said in a statement. “We owe it to our employees, the patients and the communities we serve: we need to be vaccinated 100% against Covid-19.”
