Friends and authorities confirmed Tuesday that the boy’s parents, Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35, were among the eight dead in the tragedy.
“At two years old, Aiden was left in an unimaginable situation: he grew up without his parents,” Irina Colon wrote on a GoFundMe account she created for the family.
Irina Colon helped take care of the baby until the family was found. Aiden is now in the care of his maternal grandparents.. The virtual crowdfunding Colon set up to help the family had already raised more than $2 million (about 11 million R$) as of Wednesday morning (6).

Irina McCarthy’s childhood friend, Angela Villa, described her as a cheerful, friendly person and “kind of tomboy” who loves to dress up.
“She definitely had her own style, which I’ve always admired,” Villa said in a short interview with the Associated Press news agency.

In all, seven victims have been identified:
- Kevin McCarthy, 37 years old
- Irina McCarthy, 35 years old
- Katherine Goldstein, 64 years old
- Jacqueline Sondheim, 63 years old
- Stephen Strauss, 88 years old
- Nicolas Toledo Zaragoza, 78 years old
- Eduardo Ovaldo, 69 years old
At least five of them were Highland Park residents. Only Toledo Zaragoza lived in Mexico and was visiting family in United State.
Authorities have not yet identified the eighth victim and investigators are continuing to search for evidence in the case.

On Monday, July 4, a symbolic date for Americans, when the country celebrates Independence Day, a man was shot from a rooftop during a parade in Highland Park, near Chicago, in Illinois.
The attack took place at one of the points where residents kept their seats to watch the show. The gunman opened fire at about 10:15 a.m. (8:15 a.m. GMT). Police spokesman Christopher Coveley said the operation was random and premeditated.
