Santander deposited about $ 175,000 in 75,000 UK accounts this week due to a technical glitch. The ‘Christmas Gift’ ended up with the bank’s own account holders and competitors.
The company did not specify what caused the technical glitch, but said customers did not receive a discount on their accounts after the problem. Barclays, HSBC and Virgin Money Bank customers were also affected.
According to Santander, ordinary deposits have doubled, which account holders may not pay attention to the value of their accounts. Now, it is in the account of the amount already spent by the beneficiaries.
“Due to a technical problem, we are very sorry that some of the payments from our corporate customers were copied as deposits to the recipients,” the bank said.
In a statement, Santander highlighted the request for help from competitors to recover the amount deposited. But it is not yet clear what action will be taken to recover the money.
“We are working with several banks across the UK to recover these duplicate transactions in the coming days.”
