Two Brazilian cities appeared in the ranking of the best cities in the world in 2022 by the British magazine “Time Out”: São Paulo (37th) and Rio de Janeiro (48th).
Both cities have been praised for their nightlife (in São Paulo there are nightclubs for everyone, and in Rio, there are samba bars and houses).
Edinburgh, Scotland, was first in the rankings. Buenos Aires (20) was the highest ranked city in South America. Chicago (second), in the United States, is the first in the Americas to appear on the list.
“Every year, we ask thousands of city dwellers around the world about life in their hometown right now. We want to know about the food scene and bar scene. Theater and art galleries. Nightlife and dating apps. What the neighbors are like and what neighborhoods are really cool. The idea is to create a snapshot cosmopolitan to city life and guiding people in the direction of places that locals really like,” explains British American Magazine.
“While things like community spirit and resilience were the most important factors in the past year, in 2022 we are adding extra weight to the things that make cities great places to visit and live,” Time Out details.
“Our best cities this year are those with thriving nightlife, great food and drink, art and culture, and museums galore. We spotlight places that aren’t boring, expensive or overrated, and we make sure our top picks score well on practical things too., like Walkability, good public transportation and safety, as well as sustainability”

“Don’t believe what they say in Rio about the people of São Paulo. It’s true the hardworking Bolistanos are hardworking, but they party more and there’s a spectacle for everyone in the South American nightclub capital scene,” according to a Time Out text about São Paulo.

The magazine also says that the food is among the best on the continent: “Decades of immigration have mixed food traditions from Italy, Japan and more into the culinary fabric of São Paulo.”
For “Time Out,” São Paulo is a must visit because the LGBTQIA+ community is bigger and bolder than ever, citing the city’s Pride Parade.

Rio de Janeiro gets the first praise for its landscapes. Dramatic rocks appear over wildlife-filled forests, lagoons, and golden beaches. In fact, Rio receives many points for its beauty, “riveting” between people and the potential to make new friends.
