(CNN) – Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph said in a statement that President Jovnell Moss had been assassinated in the early hours of Wednesday.

Joseph released the statement, which was sent to CNN by Smith Augustine, the Haitian ambassador to the Dominican Republic, who confirmed the murder to CNN:

“At around 1am, from July 6 to Wednesday, July 7, 2021, unknown individuals, some of whom spoke Spanish, stormed the president’s private home and wounded him. The first woman was shot and is receiving treatment, ”the document said.

The report did not say how President Moss was assassinated.

Meanwhile, the caretaker Prime Minister called it a “brutal, inhuman and barbaric act” to calm the people. “The security situation in the country is under the control of the National Police and the Haitian Armed Forces,” his statement said.

“All measures are being taken to ensure the continuity of the state and to protect the nation,” the statement said, adding that “democracy and the Republic will win.”
