Lucio Hernandez, Quintana Roo’s public security chief, confirmed on his Twitter account that the gunshots occurred amid an “argument among guests” at the Xcaret Hotel.

The Xcaret Hotel said the incident was “targeted and isolated” and that it was helping those affected by the shooting. “We deeply regret the events that occurred this afternoon,” he said in a statement.
The Canadian government said it is in contact with Mexican authorities and will not provide further information due to privacy concerns in the country.
